Gurīn Energy and NAVER to Power Clean Energy for AI Infrastructure

Leading Asian renewable energy developer Gurīn Energy has partnered with South Korea’s leading internet and technology platform company NAVER for clean energy.

NAVER will acquire a stake in Gurīn Energy’s Jindo Green Solar project and enter into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) to purchase the renewable electricity generated by the solar farm. Doing so, NAVER will secure a stable supply of clean electricity for its AI and cloud infrastructure, including its GAK Sejong and GAK Chuncheon data centres.

Jindo Green Solar is being developed by Gurīn Energy on Jindo Island, part of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City. Gurīn Energy will continue to lead project development and day-to-day management activities. 

Sun-Joo Chae, Head of Strategic Business at NAVER, said the expansion of AI and cloud services is driving power demand from data centres, securing a stable supply of renewable energy has become essential to the sustainable operation of digital infrastructure.

“Through long-term PPAs and strategic investments, NAVER will continue to strengthen the foundation for the renewable energy transition of our data centres and pursue its efforts toward achieving our 2040 Carbon Negative goal.”

Assaad Razzouk, CEO of Gurīn Energy, stated that the partnership reflects the growing convergence of the energy transition and digital transformation in Asia as energy security becomes a critical priority.

“Sunlight and wind are free – and once a plant is built, no one can embargo, blockade, or price-gouge the fuel behind it. That’s what energy sovereignty looks like: independence from fuel imports.”

South Korea has set ambitious decarbonisation goals, including achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, while expanding renewable energy deployment to achieve 100 GW in installed capacity by 2030.

Renewable energy is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting the country’s industrial competitiveness, as South Korea focuses on artificial intelligence (AI), cloud and digital infrastructure sectors as strategic areas for economic growth.

The agreement brings together one of South Korea’s largest and most influential technology companies and one of Asia’s leading renewable energy developers as partners in powering South Korea’s next generation of AI, cloud and digital infrastructure.
