Spanish energy company Moeve and ArcelorMittal, a multinational steel manufacturing corporation, are joining forces to build a new vehicle for developing projects with a direct impact on the competitiveness and sustainability of the production sector.
The collaboration has created a new platform, Green Molecules to Green Steel (G2G) with the aim to develop, scale, and implement disruptive technologies for decarbonisation. It will enable green molecules to drive the transition to low-emission steel and industrial decarbonization.
The joint venture will have its own funding to carry out the various projects. Sekuens, the Asturian Agency for Science, Business Competitiveness, and Innovation, will also participate through existing and future resources available for promoting innovation in Asturias.
The future participation of other public agencies (regional or national) or private entities is not ruled out, provided they are aligned with the objectives and structure of this platform.
Maarten Wetselaar, CEO of Moeve, said the alliance strengthens the collaboration between two major global companies committed to innovation, decarbonization, and the competitiveness of Europe.
“What we are launching today is a tool that will allow us to provide solutions and further advance the continent’s energy independence. This is the direction we have taken at Moeve, with investments and new projects through which we aspire to lead the energy transition.”
Pinakin Chaubal, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of ArcelorMittal, said they need to continue exploring technologies that will allow them to achieve environmentally and economically sustainable production.
“ArcelorMittal has large R&D centers worldwide, particularly in Spain, but given the complexity of the challenge, we will never solve it alone. Now more than ever, we need to work on collaborative innovation models, of which this platform is an excellent example.”
Innovative Decarbonisation
David González, CEO of Sekuens, stated that this platform will have a significant effect on strengthening the innovation ecosystem in Asturias, further accelerating the growth of high-growth technology companies that are leaders in areas such as security and biofuels.
This cross-sector, public-private collaboration will focus on developing industrial demonstrators that will later be scaled up in their production facilities.
The G2G alliance places green molecules and other solutions for advancing decarbonization at the heart of the new industrial model through a hub driven by the innovation centers of Moeve and ArcelorMittal.
These laboratories foster disruptive and cutting-edge technologies for CO2 capture, adding value to these molecules; biotechnology that enables improvements in production processes; and artificial intelligence applied to the creation of new materials.
It is an open and collaborative ecosystem that strengthens the innovative fabric, provides opportunities for startups, universities, and technology centers, and fosters the attraction of talent.
