AI agents going rogue….it’s no longer a storyline of Hollywood thriller movies.
This is the reality of today’s world that we are living in.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed at a press conference in New York that an artificial intelligence agent infiltrated an Australian Government website. This incident occurred in June of this year.
It involved an OpenAI agent gaining unauthorised access into the public-facing Medicare statistics reporting service portal, which is administered by Services Australia.
Albanese said the AI agent accessed both public and non-public files. A forensic investigation aided by the Australian Signals Directorate is trying to get to the bottom of it, including what other government systems were affected.
No personal information is believed to have been accessed at this stage, but investigations are ongoing. Evidence currently available is there is no broader compromise to the Services Australia network. Nonetheless, this situation is obviously unacceptable.
The Australian PM expressed disappointment with OpenAI taking its time to inform the Government that an AI agent infiltrated the government website.
“I spoke with the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman. It took the company way too long to inform the Government what had occurred and the nature of the way that that notification occurred as well was unacceptable.”
In light of the incident, Albanese has launched a taskforce to provide an urgent and immediate review into this incident to determine whether existing processes are appropriate to respond to AI-related cyber incidents.
“We will refer the incident to the Joint Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence that has been established by the Parliament. We’ll seek urgent advice on whether any offences have occurred and whether this should be referred to the Australian Federal Police. And insights from this incident will inform the development of our government’s AI standards legislation.”
The Prime Minister reiterated that AI is changing the world. “It is bringing enormous economic opportunity for growth, for productivity benefits, for breakthroughs in health, in innovation and other areas of science. But AI also poses significant risks and that’s why we need guardrails to protect our way of life.”
Albanese stressed that humans have to shape AI rather than the other way around. “Put simply, humans must remain in control.”
